Dj’s first strobe

Just like his ABC’s Dj is learning his F-stops with his new limited edition orange Alien Bee. Ok we can’t choose our kids career path in life but we can teach them a trade or two so that they will have something to fall back on if need be.

Windows 7

Windows 7 Beta Default Desktop

Yes it’s true I went Mac but I did go back. First Quarter this year I needed a new computer, at the time I was running an Imac G5 the all in one unit. But as many other photographers may note, that was not an ideal system for intensive photo work as photoshop is a memory and resource hog. Also being the limitations on how much memory you could install in that unit which was 4gigs.

I needed a system that would allow me to add additional hard drives and install at least 8gigs of memory. So we now know the needs, time to tackle the financial obligation. Mac was my computer system of choice but my wallet begged to differ. If I could have afforded to purchase a custom Mac I would have, but the bang for the buck price of the windows based pc with the new at that time i7 processor was a deal I could not pass up.

The system I purchased was a Dell, I upgraded the ram to 8gigs, added a second 24″monitor, as well as a mini fridge for the studio all for about $2000. The system also came with a canon printer/scanner.

So here we are nine months into the year and Microsoft releases Windows 7, I really didn’t have to many issues with Vista. A few blue screens of death here and there which is not acceptable, but when it worked it worked well. Even though I am guilty of installing some software (freeware) programs I shouldn’t have. So I did some research and read reviews about Windows 7 and decided to give it a try.

For starters I backed up my current os and created a bootable disc just in case something went hay wire.
The upgrade painstakingly took roughly over three hours to complete. After installation I ran into a booting issue where the system took exactly four minutes to boot. After some research into the matter, I found that it was an external hard drive I had attached to the system that caused the delay. Now the system boots up in about a min.

Being that this is the 64 bit version, Photoshop screams. It loads in three seconds, that blew me away. I have an additional hard drive installed as the scratch disk for Photoshop as well. Lightroom also performs well with the 64bit version of the software. So for me that’s the icing on the cake. I’m not a gamer so the performance thus far for me are stellar.

So if your thinking about it, go ahead and give it a try. Just make sure your current computer is up to specs for the upgrade and all should be fine. As a windows user right now I am a happy camper, lets hope I can remain this way.
